High diversity in the HORTOBÁGY NATIONAL PARK

High bird diversity and high hide disparity. This is a fantastic tour to photograph some rare and localised Eastern European bird species in our sophisticated nature inbuilt hide network installed in the well-known Hortobágy National Park.

Photo hides and species:
We have five full days for photography allowing a wide selection of hides to be used. It is possible to use a different hides every day but this is all subject of discussion with the guide on the first evening. If somebody want to spend several days in the same hide it is also possible.

Normally we would visit the „Pygmy Cormorant Hide” which is located in deeper water and is suitable to take photos of fish-eating birds and ducks (Pygmy Cormorant, Spoonbill, Ferruginous Duck etc.). We would also use the „Reedbed Hide”, which is good for skulking reedbirds as well as for herons and egrets. Our prime target will be Night Heron but Water Rail, Little Bittern and various passerines such as Bearded Tit also possible. Another hide we would use is the „Red-footed Falcon Tower”, which gives an intimate insight into the private life of these magnificent raptors. Our visits to the „Passerine Drinking Hide” vary greatly but provided weather conditions are adequate many sought-after species are possible (Black and Middle-Spotted Woodpeckers, Collared Flycatcher, Hawfinch etc.). The “Shorebird Hide” is usually good at the beginning of the season in April and early May. Also if we have time we might visit one of our “Mobile Hides” or spend some time with photographing herons and egrets in flight (mobile hides are used for Hoopoe plus anything interesting in that particular year!). We have a “Mobile Hide” for Roller and Bee-eater from mid May.

Logistics:
Our daily routine is varaibale. Some of our hides were designed for half days and others for all day usage. If the daily programme is for all days hide-usage we usually start around 04:00 and finish whenever desired (usually 18:00). The psotographers supplied with packed breakfast. If we have two photo sessions a day, the starting time is the same around 04:00 and finishes at ca. 10:30. Then the photographers have lunch and a few hour rest before going out on the afternoon session to a different hide (15:00–20:00).

Recommended equipment:
This tour will offer you very diverse photographing opportunities. Therefore, we suggest that you bring along lenses from fish-eye and wide angle to 300mm and 500mm ones.

What to bring:
torch, binocular, tripod, insect repellent, sun block and hat

Accommodation & Road Transport:
Depending on the selection of accommodation we use hotels (standard) or local Pensions (budget). Both options have en-suite facilities. Road transport is by car (4x4 if required) and depending on weather conditions can be bumpy and rough on some tracks to some hides.

Walking:
The walking effort is mostly easy throughout the tour if the weather conditions are not extremes we should be able to drive close to most hides. The ‘Shorebird Hide’ is usually approached by walking in wellington boots.

Climate:
In May-June-July most days are warm, dry and sunny and temperature is up to 30C. It can be distinctly cool at dawn however.

Group size and prices:
The minimum group size is 2 photographers
The maximum group size is 6 photographers
Tour price is depending on accomodation quality and we have two options:
Standard accommodation: 1200 euro/person.
Budget accommodation: 1050 euro/person.
This price is based on double occupancy.
Single room supplement is 102 euro/person for standard accomodation and 72 euro/person for budget accomodation.
