PHOTO CALENDAR Available photographic subjects are described below month by month to give you an idea for the very best periods to visit our hides when you are planning your own custom photo tour with us. This can really help to time your photographic holiday. Should you still have further questions regarding the timing of your tour, do not hesitate to contact us. Do you want to photograph something not in our photo calendar? Upon request we can arrange private tours for many other species as well.
JANUARY
White-tailed Eagles are present in the Hortobágy throughout the month and visit our feeding stations in good numbers
- Imperial Eagle can still be photographed
- Number of roosting Long-eared Owls peaks
- The woodpeckers and winter passerines are regularly visiting our feeders
- Excellent landscape photo opportunities
FEBRUARY
White-tailed Eagles are present in the Hortobágy throughout the month and visit our feeding stations in good numbers
- Imperial Eagle can be photographed with luck after the first week
- Roosting Long-eared Owls peak
- The woodpeckers and winter passerines are still regularly visiting our feeders
- Excellent landscape photo opportunities
MARCH
The first two weeks is one of the peak times for the White-tailed Eagles as the wintering birds joined by migrants that follow the returning wildfowl. Our feeding stations and hides usually operate until the middle of the month. In last two weeks the Eagles do not regularly visit the feeding stations
- Beautiful breeding plumaged ducks (e.g. Gadwall, Garganey, Shoveler) are abundant
- Imperial Eagles do not usually visit our feeding stations any more
- Long-eared Owls can still be seen in good numbers
- In the last week of the month the returning Pygmy Cormorants and Spoonbills start to appear in front of our hide
- Also by the last week of this month the passerine migration has started and a wider selection of species can appear at our drinking and feeding hide
APRIL
The whole month is excellent for breeding plumaged Pygmy Cormorants, Spoonbills and ducks (e.g. Ferruginous Duck)
- Our mobile hides are also available to photograph migrant ducks and waders throughout the month
- From 5th to 20th is the best period for displaying Great Bustards
- The drinking hide for passerines is excellent throughout the month with plenty of migrants
- Woodpeckers are usually abundant throughout the month and Collared Flycatchers arrive after 15th
- From about 23rd the first Red-footed Falcons start to appear near the colony and the last week of the month is the best to photograph the display and mating of these beautiful falcons
- Little Bitterns return during the last week of the month
- Excellent landscape photo opportunities
MAY
The whole month is excellent for breeding plumaged Pygmy Cormorants, Herons and Egrets and ducks (e.g. Ferruginous Duck)
- The first two weeks are superb for Marsh Terns
- Red-footed Falcon activity is very strong until about 15th but less so in the second half as they are incubating
- Our mobile hides are also available to photograph migrant waders throughout the month
- The drinking hide for passerines is excellent throughout the month
- Rollers and Bee-eaters are superb around their breeding sites from the second half of the month
- Second half of the month is the best time to photograph Aquatic Warbler
- Excellent landscape photo opportunities with lots of blooming flowers
JUNE
The first three weeks are still excellent for Pygmy Cormorants, Herons and Egrets as well as different kind of ducks usually with ducklings (e.g. Ferruginous Duck)
- Little Bittern is usually active throughout the month
- Red-footed Falcon activity is superb from 15th when the adults start to feed their young so excellent flight and food-sharing momets can be captured
- The drinking hide for passerines is good until the middle of the month
JULY
Juvenile Pygmy Cormorants and egrets start to appear in high numbers in front of our hides
- Little Bittern is usually active throughout the month
- Greylag Goose common throughout the month
- Red-footed Falcon activity is excellent until young birds fledge
- The drinking hide for passerines can be good with lots of juvenile birds
AUGUST
Juvenile Pygmy Cormorants, herons and egrets are still good
- Little Bittern is usually active throughout the month
- The drinking hide for passerines can be good with lots of juveniles. The first migrants appear.
- At the end of the month Dotterels arrive
- Some scarce arctic waders can also be good from 20th
SEPTEMBER
Pygmy Cormorants, herons and egrets are still good
- Dotterels usually good throughout the month
- Cranes arrive in masses from about 15th and the last two weeks is the best time for bathing and drinking Cranes
- The drinking hide for passerines is excellent with lots of migrants
- Excellent landscape photo opportunities
OCTOBER
Pygmy Cormorant is still possible in the first three weeks
- Cranes are excellent throughout the month
- Imperial Eagle is starting to visit the feeding station from about 20th
- Long-eared Owls start to appear in the wintering roost area
- The drinking hide for passerines is excellent with lots of migrants
- Excellent landscape photo opportunities
NOVEMBER
Some wintering ducks such as Smew and Goldeneye possible
- The first week can still be very good for Cranes
- White-tailed Eagles starting to visit the feeding stations from 15th
- Imperial Eagle is excellent throughout the month
- Long-eared Owl roost is building up
- The woodpeckers and winter passerines are starting to visit our feeders
- Excellent landscape photo opportunities
DECEMBER
