Pale-mandibled Aracari - Pteroglossus erythropygius (Ecuador)

A fantastic bird of the western lowlands of Ecuador. Until recently (when found just across the border in extreme northwestern Peru) one of a dozen or so true Ecuadorian endemics. Note that HBW 7 and SACC (the South American Classification Committee of the A.O.U) lump this form (and Stripe-billed Aracari P. sanguineus) in Collared Aracari P. torquatus. One of the very charismatic owls of the Neotropic. Here this superb Crested owl was absolutely soaking wet in the rain with drops of water dripping down from its crest. A scarce hummer of the Andes. The nominate race (endemic to the Chocó region) with an obvious rufous malar stripet should be called 'Rufous-gaped Hillstar’. This lovely male woodpecker is the only 'celeus' in western Ecuador and a typical inhabitant of very moist forest where it is generally occupies the upper canopy habitat. This photo was taken near Lita in September, 2008. Photographer: János Oláh
