Tour information
Over the years, we have recognised the growing demand for a dedicated Danube Delta photography tour, exploring our well-known Delta trails in true Sakertours style. After many years of experience in the region, we have also identified the ideal time of year for this specialised tour: late June and early July. We will be based at a single accommodation in the heart of the Delta, allowing us to enjoy a relaxed yet intensive photography experience in this remarkable wilderness. Those who have previously travelled with us on our classic tour can now return to the region for a dedicated Danube Delta-only photography experience. Every day, we will explore the Delta aboard our superb purpose-built photography boat, accompanied by two Sakertours guides: a dedicated photography guide and an experienced boat driver. If you would like to spend a full week with your camera immersed in the spectacular waterways and wildlife of the Danube Delta, this is the tour for you!
Tour starting and ending time: It is important to book your flight according to the official starting and ending times of the tour! Our bus and guide will be waiting all participants in the Otopeni Airport at Bucharest. Please make sure you can reach the starting point at 14:00 on the tour starting date! If you wish to arrive earlier to Bucharest our office can help you to book accommodation and logistics. However if you arrive early you need to make your way to the airport for the meeting time. In some cases we can pick up clients from the nearby airport hotels (please check with our office). Also very important that the tour only ends at 13:00 on the last day so please do not book flights out of Bucharest earlier than 16:00 on the last day!
Timing: Recommended period between May and July
Duration: 7 days (6 nights)
Logistics: The photo day usually starts at 04.30 with a coffee or tea and some morning biscuits, than the photo boat will be ready for the action for the next 5-6 hours. After the morning session photographers can have breakfast and time to download pictures and rest. A light lunch will be served at 14.00 PM than from 15.30 the afternoon photo session starts and will last until sunset.
Recommended equipment: This tour will offer you very diverse photographing opportunities. Therefore, we suggest that you bring along lenses from fish-eye and wide angle to 300mm and 500mm ones.
Expected number of birds species photographed on this tour: 30-40 species
What to bring: torch, binocular, tripod, insect repellent, waterproof and/or slipping proof sandals or slippers, wind proof clothing for the fast boat rides, sun block and hat.

We are using a good 4 star Hotel in the Danube Delta. Road transport is by air-conditioned minibus and roads are generally very good.
Walking: The walking effort is mostly very easy and much reduced throughout the tour.
Climate: In June-July most days are warm, dry and sunny and temperature is up to 30C. We will focus on the early morning and late afternoon hours however so it will not be inconvenient.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1. The tour begins at Bucharest International Airport, from where we will transfer you to the Danube Delta. We kindly ask you to arrange your arrival in Bucharest between 13:00 and 15:00 local time, and your departure within the same time window, to ensure a comfortable start and finish to the tour. If you cannot find a suitable flight arriving in Bucharest on the first day of the tour, we recommend travelling a day earlier. Our office staff will be happy to help you arrange suitable accommodation near the airport if required. We expect to reach our accommodation in the evening. During dinner, accompanied by a glass of fine local wine, our guide will introduce you to the plans for the following day and explain the itinerary using a map of the Delta.
Days 2 – 6. Five full days in the heart of the Delta!
Deep inside the Danube Delta, we will explore different lakes, channels, reedbeds, and hidden corners each morning and afternoon, searching for a wide variety of bird species and photographing them in the best possible light. We will also have plenty of opportunities to capture interesting behaviour, action, and those special moments when the light is at its most atmospheric. Our accommodation is located close to some of the Delta’s best birding and photography sites, allowing us to maximise our time in the field and minimise time spent travelling between locations. Each day, we will start around 30 minutes before sunrise and return to our accommodation for lunch and a well-deserved rest during the hottest part of the day. The afternoon photography session will begin later and continue until sunset. During the summer, the days are long, but rather than spending the hottest hours of the day in the field, we make the most of the cooler mornings and evenings, when the light is also at its best. This allows us to enjoy a productive and comfortable photography experience throughout our stay.
Day 7. After breakfast, we will leave the Danube Delta behind and travel back to Bucharest for your flight home. There will be no time for photography on this day due to the relatively long journey. We will spend approximately two hours travelling by boat to Tulcea, followed by around three hours by road to Bucharest. During the boat journey, it can be surprisingly cool and windy, even in summer, so please make sure you bring warm and/or windproof clothing. See our ‘What to Bring’ section for further details.

Carpathian Brown Bear Photography Extension
Extend your Danube Delta photography tour with a short photo break dedicated to capturing wild Brown Bears from our specially designed photography hides. The Carpathian Mountains are home to one of Europe’s largest Brown Bear populations, and during the spring and summer months, these magnificent animals regularly appear in front of our hides, often providing excellent photographic opportunities. This extension adds just two extra days to your photography tour, giving you the chance to experience one of Romania’s most exciting wildlife photography opportunities.
