Romania Mammal Tour (9 days)

Our very best all-inclusive mammal watching tour in Romania. Usually a single tour run every year in August or September and this 9 days long tour focusing on two main areas: Dobrudja Plains and Danube Delta for the first half of the tour and the Carpathian Mountains in Transylvania for the second half. We try to see as many mammal species on this tour as possible. Our tour recorded 46 species in 2020, 49 species in 2021 and finally cracked 50 species in 2022. In 2023 we got lucky and saw 60 species of mammals! We hope to repeat the numbers and quality as well. Mammals are not easy to see but we have a good chance to connect with some rare species too. There is a chance for the following goodies: European Mink, Romanian (Dobrudja) Hamster, Brandt’s Myotis, Western Barbastelle, Bechstein’s Bat and Kuhl’s Pipistrelle, Wildcat, Steppe Polecat, Grey Wolf and even have an outside chance to see Eurasian Lynx or Marbled Polecat. The ‘Carpathian’ Chamois which is a potential split is also one of our targets. Certainly an amazing tour with a lot of night activity under the most fabulous starry sky! A real adventure for mammal lovers!

Eurasian Lynx Tour in Transylvania (7 days)

Eurasian Lynx is a much sought-after mammal species to see but it’s a real ghost in the forest. They are difficult to see in the wild but we will try to see one! Transylvania in Romania holds probably the biggest Eurasian Lynx population in Europe and a lot of reintroduction program was based on wild-caught Lynxes from Transylvania. We have been trying to set up this tour for years. We have gathered a fair amount of information on several territories but seeing a wild Eurasian Lynx is still going to be a challenge. Our first tour in March 2022 gave us many new information. We are certainly on a good track. We have had many information throughout the tour and were very close to Lynx on several occasions, and some of us had 2 brief sightings as well!

European Mink Special Tour (5 days)

This is a specialized short mammal-watching tour to look for the critically endangered European Mink. We have seen the Mink on both 2021 and 2022 tours but we missed it in 2023. Definitely the ‘only’ accessible and somewhat reliable place in the World to see this rare mammal! Although the mink is our prime target but we will try to see many other mammals as well as experiencing the Danube Delta under the stars. Something magical and unforgattable! There are not many places in Europe where we can hope to see one of the rarest mammals, but the Danube Delta in Romania still offers this chance for mammal watchers! The European Mink was once widespread from Northern Spain and Western France throughout Central Europe towards the Ural Mountains but it has severely declined due to many factors. One of the strongholds now is in the Danube Delta and we have a good chance to connect with it on our three nights stay inside the delta. We will also have very good chance to see other mammals such as Golden Jackal, Wildcat, Raccoon Dog, Steppe Mouse as well as a few bats like Schreiber’s Bent-winged Bat, Daubenton’s Bat and some Pipistrelle species.
